Post 5 – Deepening My Astra Translation Work

Introduction

After becoming familiar with GlotPress and completing my first translations, it was time to dedicate more effort to the Astra – Spanish (Costa Rica) project. At this stage, I began contributing more consistently, carefully reviewing each translation string and ensuring that my work met the quality standards expected by the WordPress community.

As I progressed, I realized that many translation strings had to follow specific guidelines, such as preserving the same symbols, punctuation, and formatting used in the original text. I also learned the importance of checking terms that already had established translations in the glossary or previous references to maintain consistency and avoid confusion across different Spanish-speaking regions.

What I Did

I continued translating additional strings within the Astra project using GlotPress. Before submitting each suggestion, I carefully analyzed the original text to understand its context and ensure the translation sounded natural for users in Costa Rica.

I also followed the recommendations provided by WP Polyglots, avoiding literal translations and preserving technical elements such as variables, placeholders, and HTML tags whenever they appeared.

Whenever necessary, I consulted the glossary to maintain consistent terminology throughout my work.

What I Learned

This stage taught me that high-quality software translation requires much more than language skills. Understanding the context of each string is essential to producing clear and natural translations.

I also learned that maintaining consistency across translations improves the overall user experience.

Reflection

As I continued working on the project, I became increasingly comfortable using GlotPress. What initially seemed like a complex platform gradually became a familiar workspace, allowing me to focus more on translation quality than on learning the tool itself.
